25 September 2025, World Maritime Day
On this day of the Season of Creation, as we mark World Maritime Day and the anniversary of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the Gospel reminds us of Herod who was perplexed and asked of Jesus: “Who then is this about whom I hear such things?” May our lives be a clear witness to Christ, the Lord of creation and history. With confidence, we pray: LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER or GUIDE US SAFELY THROUGH THE SEAS, O LORD.
1. That the Church may proclaim Christ with clarity, helping all peoples recognize Him as the Lord who brings peace to our lives and harmony to creation. Let us pray to the Lord.
2. That world leaders may strengthen their commitment to the 17 SDGs, ensuring that sustainability is not just a promise but a path walked together. May policies for climate, equity, and peace flourish. Let us pray to the Lord.
3. That on this World Maritime Day, we pray for seafarers and all who depend on the sea. May the International Maritime Organization (IMO), now working for net-zero ship emissions by 2050, guide us toward cleaner oceans and a sustainable future. Let us pray to the Lord.
4. That those who suffer from storms at sea, displacement, or ecological crises may be consoled and strengthened by Christ who calms the waves. Let us pray to the Lord.
5. That the dead, especially those lost at sea, may rest in the eternal harbor of God’s mercy. Let us pray to the Lord.
God of the seas and skies, you guide us through calm waters and storms alike. On this World Maritime Day, make us faithful stewards of the oceans and builders of a sustainable future for all peoples. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer for Creation from Laudato Si’
This prayer by Pope Francis appeared at the end of his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si'. It is for all who believe in God who is the all-powerful Creator.
All powerful God,
you are present in the universe
and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with your peace, that we may live
as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned
and forgotten of this earth,
so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives,
that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty,
not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts
of those who look only for gain
at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,
to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognize that we are profoundly united
with every creature
as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle,
for justice, love and peace.
