Prayers of the Faithful 8 September 2025, National Green Building Day, Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Gospel: Matthew 1:18-23
In the birth of Mary, the Father’s plan for the world’s redemption entered its final stage. She who was “full of grace” became the Mother of Emmanuel, God-with-us. Today, on her birthday, we also mark National Green Building Day, a reminder that caring for creation and building sustainably reflect God’s desire for a just and life-giving world. With Mary at our side, let us turn to God in prayer: LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER or THROUGH THE INTERCESSION OF MARY, BLESS US, FATHER.
1. That the Church, entrusted with the Gospel of Mary’s Son, may fearlessly proclaim Christ as Savior, bringing hope to every land and culture. Let us pray to the Lord.
2. That peoples and nations may recognize in Mary’s Son, Emmanuel, the God who saves us, and work together for peace, justice, and harmony among all. Let us pray to the Lord.
3. That we may honor our mothers with gratitude and love, drawing from Mary’s example of faith, humility, and care for life. Let us pray to the Lord.
4. That Mary’s prayers may touch their hearts and lead them back to Christ, the source of forgiveness and new life. Let us pray to the Lord.
5. That on this National Green Building Day, leaders and communities may promote eco-friendly practices, safeguard resources, and build structures that respect the rhythm and harmony of nature—so that future generations may live in a healthier and more sustainable world. Let us pray to the Lord.
6. That those burdened by illness or sorrow may find strength in Christ, comfort through Mary’s intercession, and hope in God’s healing love. Let us pray to the Lord.
7. That those who have gone before us may share in the joy of heaven with Mary and all the saints. Let us pray to the Lord.
Father of mercy, in the birth of Mary you gave the world the dawn of salvation. Through her intercession, hear the prayers of your children gathered in faith. May we, like Mary, welcome your Son with open hearts and help build a world that reflects your justice and care for creation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer for Creation from Laudato Si’
This prayer by Pope Francis appeared at the end of his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si'. It is for all who believe in God who is the all-powerful Creator. All powerful God,
you are present in the universe
and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with your peace, that we may live
as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned
and forgotten of this earth,
so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives,
that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty,
not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts
of those who look only for gain
at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,
to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognize that we are profoundly united
with every creature
as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle,
for justice, love and peace.
